Oozing with cheese and crispy on top, lasagne is a balance of flavors that combine so well!
Flat sheets of pasta, layered with rich tomato sauce, white sauce and cheese is the perfect formula for a hearty and filling meal. Said to have originated in Naples, Italy, lasagne might be one of the oldest types of pasta in the world. It’s certainly not outdated.
The traditional lasagne of Naples, lasagne la carnival, is layered with sausage, small fried meatballs, boiled egg, ricotta and mozzarella with a Neapolitan ragù. Lasagne al forno, is probably the most common type found around the world; using the ragù sauce, bechamel sauce and lots of mozzarella cheese.
Nowadays fillings can vary and even pasta-less lasagne appears on some menus; sometimes using eggplant as the ‘pasta sheets’.
Most popular is still the ragù-filled variety or with a mix of Mediterranean vegetables instead. Individual portions baked in ramekins or large slabs baked in a lasagne dish and cut into portions, with a nice green salad on the side, you can’t go wrong!
