Portable grills line streets in so many places, especially close to schools. Fried and battered or grilled over hot coals, there are many ways to enjoy local, sweet, delicious bananas.

Bamboo Sticky Rice

Savory sticky rice with beans that is steamed inside the bamboo section and normally sold on the side of the road by a vendor with a bicycle; a delicious snack on the go.

Insects

Strange for foreigners but a tasty snack nonetheless, normally fried with copious amounts of garlic and some chilli; choose from crickets, silkworms and more; even the famous delicacies of tarantula and scorpion.

Nom Pan

“Nom pan, nom pan” will blare from speakers as the sellers of bread cycle or motor around town. If you like fluffy, fresh bread, then hail one of these mobile sellers down.

Snails and Clams

Found doused in salt, chili and herbs, then grilled in the sunshine on large metal sheets, with wheels to be mobile. You’ll notice these beauties laid out in different colored sections depending on what they’re marinating in.

Lort Chas

These tasty noodles are handmade, local and delicious, mixed with bean sprouts and sliced cabbage and cooked on a hot plate with oil and sauce poured over and a fried duck egg on top — sunny side up!!

Meatballs

(aka mystery meat) Very colorful, different shapes and sizes, of unknown origins, skewered and resting on piles of ice, make your choice and it will be deep fried and served up with a side salad.

Grilled Meat

Especially at breakfast time, there will be chicken and pork grilling on many a BBQ sending wafts of scent traveling around the area, served with rice and chili sauce. In the evening, grilled meat on sticks make a quick snack, or stuffed inside a baguette with some pickled radish for a little more substance.

Bong Dtea Gohn

Otherwise known as balut, this duck fetus egg is a popular snack throughout the region and is commonly sold from a basket on the back of a bicycle or even steamed above a clay stove. If they’re just in a basket, they normally have a chip in the egg shell so you can identify them!

Nom Krok

Delicious half-circles cooked on a dimpled pan, filled with chives or corn and joined together. Sweet and coconutty, a little bit savory, guaranteed just one isn’t enough.
