Korean restaurants are proving popular around Cambodia, from stand-alone restaurants to tiny dive-ins like the Bormeo, which are often bustling, vibrant places with rows of motorbikes lined up out the front.
BBQ, bibimbap, soups, dumplings and so many sides, there is a lot to discover about Korean cuisine.
Most places offer a ‘set’ which is based around a main meal with literally dozens of sides. Choose from BBQ, sundubu jjigae and bibimbap or one of the many other variations and then gorge yourself with side dishes (called banchan) like kimchi (vegetables fermented with chilli, sukju namul (bean sprouts), sigumchi namul, and lots of things with radishes and cucumbers.Whilst BBQ is most heavy, the sides are nearly all vegan and dishes like bibimbap can be vegetarian.
Bibimbap is a sizzling hot stone bowl filled with rice and vegetables and often with a raw egg on top which you mix through until it cooks and all the ingredients are really mixed together. You can then add gochujang (a paste made of chilli, rice, etc) and let’s not miss around, use a spoon over chopsticks to get a really good blend of ingredients in each bite.Take your appetite with you, you will not leave a Korean restaurant with an inch to move. Better yet, wear your stretchy pants.
