Crêpes have made their way to Cambodia – and now it’s possible to enjoy this delicious French snack in many adaptations.
In Siem Reap, carts set up around the downtown Pub Street area at all hours of the day. Sometimes referred to as Roti — these thin sweet crêpes are expertly smeared across a hot plate then topped with nutella and bananas and folded up into a neat parcel.
Crêperies can be found among the streets of main cities, serving up the more traditional French style of crêpe and galette (made with buckwheat). Siem Reap, Battambang and Phnom Penh all have venues set to a delightful French garden for sure resorts and hotels boast when they have crêpes on the menu.
In some far-flung reaches of the Cambodian countryside, it is also possible to find variations of the crêpe in form of ‘fluffier, more cake-pop pastries served with butter and banana. Blending sweet and salty — as is so popular in Cambodia. Perfect sustenance after a jungle hike.
Similar to a style seen in Thailand, some carts serve a crispy crêpe, lined with a white sticky sweet sauce and sprinkled with candied coconut, then folded over or rolled into a tube.
Special events can often bring closet crêpe-makers out into the light. Keep an eye out for events around the French Bastille Day in July. In Siem Reap, there is even a group that mixes pancakes and art, called PancArt which features a variety of art activities and talks, always accompanied with pancake!
